It’s time to start growing vegetables!
Spring is finally beginning to show itself and we are gearing up for our third Incredible Edible Milbridge season. We invite you to come to our Incredible Edible Community Meeting on Tuesday, May 19 from 6:00 – 7:00 at WHRL.
Here’s some of what’s been going on!
We have been awarded grant money to help us with materials for ten more vegetable and herb gardens in down town Milbridge. This year we will focus on mentoring businesses as they learn how to care for the gardens that we install. We have already been visiting businesses and have received lots of helpful feedback on what kind of assistance would be most valuable.
Our spring workshops are underway. Even with the slow start to the season, folks have made their way to WHRL to take advantage of these hands-on workshops. We are pleased that new volunteers are emerging.
The Market Garden
Plans are also underway for the Market Garden at the Red Barn. As many of you know, the sod was turned in November on a 125 ft. x 75 ft. space next to the motel. This week, Michael Hayden has been ordering compost and other soil amendments to get the field in shape for spring planting.
Milbridge Elementary School
We are continuing to work with the Milbridge Elementary School as they develop their raised beds. Lucille Willey, principal at Narraguagus High School, has asked us to install a large raised bed there. Three NHS teachers have just completed the School Garden 101 workshop offered by the Cooperative Extension Service. They are beginning to think about planting and about curriculum ideas that will get students out into the gardens, and learning how to use the vegetables they grow.
This brief update is our call to action!!! We invite you to come on May 19, and bring a friend or two! You can come and simply find out more, or you can come and sign up to help put in a garden. No gardening experience needed. We’ll show you what to do. It’s fun and really rewarding to create beautiful gardens with the help of friends.
